Welcome to [community profile] i_made_a_choice, a DW community for Finn-centered fannishness of all kinds. Please read our profile for some ground rules.

We're trying to keep content somewhat organized using DW's nifty hierarchical tags, so here are a few suggestions for tags to put to your centent:

- Introduce yourself using the housekeeping:introduction tag!
- shipping: ship name would be helpful for content that contains shipping, such as shipping: finnpoe or shipping: finnrey. A post may have more than one shipping tag, of course.
- fan work: work type helps filter by type of work, such as fan work: fanfic, fan work: fanvid and so on.
- meta: subject matter for metas is a good way to keep track of metas with similar subject matter, for instance meta: stormtrooper uprising, meta: force-sensitive finn, meta: fandom racism and so on. You can use the discussion:, rant: headers as well if those fit better.
- media: title is helpful if your post heavily features a specific piece of canon work, such as media:the force awakens or media:before the awakening.

Don't sweat it too much and if you're unsure it's fine to leave a post untagged, just be aware the admins might add/correct tags in the interest of organization. Have fun and love Finn!

There's a great conversation on Twitter about Finn and the racial empathy gap between [personal profile] stitchmediamix and [Bad username or site: diversehighfantasy @ tumblr--or] it was great until someone felt the need to add one of those "actually I'm not racist because..." replies. In this case they evidently lost empathy for Finn when he "started firing on his own side."

Stitch has the post-game of this exchange, including responses that are on other threads and/or deleted later on, so refer to that thread for an analysis on why this bit of idiotic derailment is so indicative of fandom's problem with racism. I made my own incoherent and much-footnoted rant post.

In this meta I argued that Finn and Rey, as befitting their status as joint protagonists of the sequel trilogy, represent different facets of oppression in the ST-era galaxy--Finn, as someone kidnapped and enslaved by a totalitarian dictatorship, and Rey, as someone who was abandoned and uncared for in a dog-eat-dog society. Because of this Finn's reaction to his trauma was to get away and be left alone, while Rey's reaction was to get back to a place where she believed she had a chance to be loved and cared for again. Ultimately their most effective responses was not to run away or run back, though, but to join together in kindness and solidarity. In my mind this also foreshadows how the galaxy far, far away itself can break out of its loop of recurring fascism and find a way toward, at long last, justice for all.

I'm L.J., mod and creator of this comm. I've been a casual fan of Star Wars for about 20 years now, ever since I watched the original trilogy on VHS (yes, VHS) as a collage student. I went into it completely unspoiled; I gasped in shock at the "I am your father!" line. It was the sequel trilogy and specifically the character of Finn that made me into a more hardcore fan, leading me to write meta and fic, make edits and gifs, and engage in bitter and protracted fandom wars on Tumblr.

I never exactly left Tumblr. Can I get all melodramatic and say "Tumblr left me?" Long story short, Stuff Happened that made Tumblr less fun for me and I started spending more time away from it, which was a positive change in my online life. I don't miss it but I do miss the Finn content and discussions, hence this comm.

IRL I'm a mother of a toddler and an educator/academic/translator. Other fandom interests include the new She-Ra and The Good Place. Non-fandom interests include writing and researching history.

Finn's Subversive Decency was an early meta I posted on Tumblr about how Finn's kindness and decency are not about his being some kind of hopelessly pure and innocent character but were rather symptoms of defiance in themselves, whether he realized it or not.
